How We Design a Heating System That Fits the House
Replacing a furnace is not a swap. The old unit was probably sized by a rule of thumb decades ago, the house may have been re-insulated or had windows replaced since, and the duct system may never have matched the equipment in the first place. If we install a new furnace against the same assumptions, you get a new machine with the same old comfort complaints.
So the first visit is measurement, not a sales pitch. We work out what the house actually needs and what the duct can actually carry, then match equipment to those numbers. Here is what goes into the design:
- Room by room measurements, ceiling heights, and window count with orientation, since a west facing wall of glass changes the answer.
- Insulation levels in the attic and walls, plus any obvious air sealing problems worth fixing before you buy capacity you do not need.
- Static pressure readings on the existing duct system, which tell us whether the duct can move the air the new unit will produce.
- Return air sizing, the most commonly undersized part of an older system and the reason plenty of new installs feel weak.
- Gas line capacity and meter sizing, especially when the new unit has a different input rating than the old one.

If your furnace and AC are both aging out, replacing them as one heat pump system usually costs less than two separate projects.
A gas furnace still wins in some houses. If your AC is newer and only the furnace failed, if you have a strong preference for the feel of gas heat, or if the electrical panel does not have room for a heat pump without an upgrade, a straight furnace replacement is the cleaner answer. Dual fuel, a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup, is the middle path for larger homes up toward East Highlands Ranch where cold mornings hit harder.
