Where Ductless Wins and Where It Does Not
A mini split is a small outdoor condenser tied to one or more indoor heads by a refrigerant line set, no ductwork involved. That makes it the obvious answer for spaces the original system was never designed to reach: a converted garage, a permitted addition, a bonus room over the garage that runs ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house, or an older home with no duct chases at all.
It is also a heat pump, so the same unit heats in winter. Around here that matters more than people think, because our overnight lows are mild enough that a mini split runs efficiently all season without the backup heat strips a colder climate would need. Situations where we recommend ductless:
