What We Actually Do During a Furnace Tune-up
Around here a furnace sits unused from about March until November. Nine months of dust settles on the burners, the flame sensor, and the blower wheel, and the first cold night is when all of that shows up as a system that will not stay lit. That is the whole reason a fall tune-up pays for itself: it clears the exact problems that cause the December no-heat calls.
A tune-up on our schedule runs about an hour on a standard gas furnace. It is hands-on work, not a walk-through. Here is what gets done:
- Burners removed, inspected for rust and debris, and cleaned so the flame pattern is even across all of them.
- Flame sensor pulled and polished, then verified with a microamp reading against the manufacturer minimum.
- Ignitor resistance tested, because a weak ignitor gives you warning before it fails if somebody bothers to measure it.
- Heat exchanger inspected with a camera and combustion readings taken to rule out cracks and carbon monoxide.
- Inducer motor, pressure switch, and flue checked for blockage, corrosion, or a bird nest, which we find more often than you would think.

What we find most often on local systems
Dust load is the biggest local factor. Homes up near the Crafton Hills and along the edges of open ground pull in fine dirt all summer, and by fall the blower wheel can be carrying enough buildup to cut airflow noticeably. That shows up as a furnace tripping its high limit, and people assume the furnace is failing when it just cannot move air.
The second thing is attic furnaces with condensate and flue issues.
